Christopher E. Guthrie, 65, college professor and Department Head of Social Sciences at Tarleton State University died on Monday, November 3, 2014. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2014, at Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Auditorium at Tarleton State University.
Christopher was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 7, 1949, to Charles James and Phyllis (Ise) Guthrie. He married Teresa Davidian on June 19, 1998, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Chris led a happy and enriched life. He cherished his family. He was a proud supporter of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. His favorite athletes were Walter Payton and Ernie Banks and his two grandchildren were the light of his life. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.
Guthrie loved to work at Tarleton State University and was especially proud of the Department of Social Sciences and the Center for Instructional Innovation. He joined the Tarleton faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor of history. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from the history of western civilization, the French Revolution and Imperial Russia, to special topics in modern European history.
During his more than three decades at Tarleton, Guthrie has authored or had scholarly articles appear in more than 15 publications, including a book, “The Legacy of John Tarleton: The History of Tarleton State University, 1899-1999.” He reviewed and presented multiple papers at various conferences across the United States. At the time of his death, he was completing a book on “Philippe Egalit.”
Guthrie has received numerous honors, awards, fellowships and research grants, including serving as a faculty fellow for the Center for Instructional Innovation, winning the Dick Smith Spirit Award, the Minnie Stevens Piper Outstanding Professor Award for Teaching Excellence, the Jack and Louise Arthur Excellence in Teaching Award and the O.A. Grant Excellence in Teaching Award, among others.
A native of Chicago, Guthrie received his bachelor of arts in political science, master of arts in modern European history and Ph.D. in French history, all from Northern Illinois University. He also received additional training during a seminar on the French Revolution at L’Ecole des Hautes Etudes in Paris.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Davidian of Stephenville, TX; mother, Phyllis Guthrie of Stephenville, TX; daughter, Sophie Wilson and husband, Lowell, of Stephenville, TX; son, Andrew Charles Joseph Guthrie of Stephenville, TX; sister, Cindy Brown and husband, Roy, of Fort Worth, TX; brother, Timothy Guthrie and wife, Peggy, of Stephenville, TX; and two grandchildren, Madeleine Rose Davis of Stephenville, TX, and Christopher Clarence Wilson of Stephenville, TX. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles James Guthrie, infant daughter, Sarah Marie Guthrie, and brother, Randy Guthrie.
