(November 10, 2014) — Good news, Tarleton State – The TexAnns don’t have to go through Baylor to contend for a Lone Star Conference women’s basketball championship.
The Lady Bears welcomed Tarleton into the Ferrell Center in Waco for a preseason exhibition Monday night, and showed why they won the Big 12 last season and begin the new campaign ranked sixth nationally. Five Baylor players scored in double figures in the 102-41 rout that by no means is an indicator of what Tarleton can expect from Division II foes.
Nina Davis is a big reason Baylor expects to contend for a national title and a big reason the Lady Bears shot a blistering 64.7 percent from the field. Davis was 12-13 from the floor, scoring 28 points. Kristina Higgins was 7-8, Khadijiah Cave 7-10 and Kristy Wallace 5-11 with each scoring 14. The foursome for 70 points on 73.8 percent shooting.
Tarleton shot a paltry 21.1 percent against the longer, quicker Baylor defenders. The TexAnns hoisted 32 3-pointers but connected on just five for 15.6 percent.
Morgan Ashmore led the TexAnns with eight points and four assists. Kathy Thomas scored seven and Avery Mack added six.
Tarleton begins its regular season with this weekend’s TexAnn Tipoff Classic, being held in conjunction with the men’s Texan Tipoff Classic at Wisdom Gym. The TexAnns face Southern Arkansas at 5 p.m. Friday and St. Mary’s at 5 p.m. Saturday. Tarleton’s men’s team follows each day.
