(November 29, 2014) — A good weekend by senior guard Kathy Thomas meant a great one for Tarleton State.
Thomas scored 17 points, six of them in the final six minutes, to lead Tarleton (4-1) to a 65-61 victory over Texas-Permian Basin in the Lowe’s Market Thanksgiving Classic at Lubbock Christian University Saturday.
Thomas was 8-13 from the floor, remaining hot a day after hitting all seven of her 3-point attempts en rout to a career-best 25 when the TexAnns edged host Lubbock Christian in overtime Friday.
UTPB, which owns a victory over preseason No. 1 West Texas A&M, led 55-49 until Tarleton dominated down the stretch. The TexAnns allowed just two field goals and outscored the Falcons 16-6 over the final eight minutes.
Raven McGrath began the closing stretch with a 3-pointer to pull Tarleton within three. Twice Ikpeaku Iwobi cut it to a one-point deficit before a layup by Thomas put the TexAnns on top 58-57 with 5:43 remaining.
Iwobi, who scored six of her 15 in the final eight minutes, hit an inside jumper for a 3-point edge, but UTPB used a free throw by Shaquiri Graham and a basket by Giselle Loya to even it up at 60-60 with 3:16 left.
Thomas gave Tarleton the lead for good with with another layup, then followed a UTPB free throw by Graham with a jumper to make it 64-61 with 1:23 left.
The teams exchanged defensive stops before Karli Moore finished the scoring with a free throw for a two-possession lead with only eight seconds to go.
Iwobi was 6-7 from the floor, combining with Thomas to go 14-20. The rest of the TexAnns were 12-27 and they shot 55.3 percent as a team. Defensively, they held UTPB to just 35 percent. The Falcons hoisted 25 3-point attempts but made only even.
UTPB was paced by Valerie Barriga with 22 points. Graham scored 12 and Loya 11.
Tarleton returns home to Wisdom Gym to face Arlington Baptist at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
