Texas Highway Patrol officers are continuing their investigation into the three-vehicle crash that took the life of Philip Dwayne Wood, 42 of Granbury, in front of Pal-Con on Monday night. Senior Trooper and Public Information Officer Dub Gillum said Thursday morning that his department is looking into a number of tips from area residents.
“We have had a few leads on the ‘truck’ hauling the hay bale, but nothing solid,” Gillum reported. “We are still looking into it and reviewing business videos in Stephenville along US 377.”
One resident, who saw The Flash’s article on the accident, contacted Gillum’s office with what he called a “good, creditable tip.” However, that tip, as well as others, have not resulted in the officers tracking down who dropped the bale.
“We had a woman call Monday morning, after seeing the article on the fatal car crash, about a truck she thought was about to lose a bale of hay, and a good description of the truck, but it didn’t turn out,” he said. “We had witnesses at the scene state it was a pick-up truck pulling a small trailer. Another witness stated she tried to tell the driver of the truck who lost the bale of hay that it had fallen off, but he continued on.”
Gillum said his office continues their investigation and possible criminal charges could be filed (negligent homicide). However, those would be discussed with Erath County District Attorney Alan Nash and an Erath County Grand Jury.
Another possibility is that the driver of the vehicle who dropped the hay bale could face a charge of failure to secure a load. That charge is a misdemeanor to felony charge, depending on what Nash and investigators decide.
The Highway Patrol is still investigating this accident and Gillum asks that anyone who knows anything about the hay bale that was dropped in the southbound lanes of US 377, near Pal-Con Monday night, or the vehicle that was hauling hay in the area at the time, to contact the Highway Patrol office in Stephenville at (254)965-7893, or the office in Granbury at (817)579-3337.
