Sport: (December 4, 2014) — Since he was old enough to be lifted onto a horse, Marty Yates has dreamed of reaching the National Finals Rodeo.
Once he arrived, it took the Stephenville cowboy just 7.4 seconds to make his mark.
That’s how long it took Yates to rope and tie his calf in the tie-down roping, winning the go-round and $19,002.40 on opening night of the 2014 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Thursday.
Yates, 20, is in just his second season of professional competition after winning all the major youth titles. He pushed his 2014 earnings over $102,000 with the win, and he wasn’t the only local cowboy to take the first go-round.
Turtle Powell of Stephenville and Dakota Kirchenschlager of Morgan Mill teamed up to rope head and heels, respectively, in 4.0 seconds, winning the team roping and $19,002.40 each. Powell, who now has more than $1.34 million in career earnings, is in his ninth WNFR. Kirchenschlager, 23, is in the finals for the third time.
The team roping was dominated by cowboys who call the Cross Timbers home. Placing second in 4.50 were Charly Crawford (header) of Huckabay and Shay Carroll (heeler) of Dublin, winning $15,018.03 each. Clay Tryan (header) of Lipan and Jade Corkill (heeler) of Huckabay were third in 4.70 for $11,340.14 each.
Jacobs Crawley of Stephenville split third and fourth in the saddle bronc riding on opening night of his fourth consecutive WNFR appearance. He scored 80.5 on Look Again to win $9,654.44.
Cody Ohl, 41, is no stranger to the WNFR. Leading out the tie-down roping in his 20th finals, the Hico cowboy and six-time world champion posted a 7.8 that held up for fourth fourth place and $7,968.75. Ohl’s career earnings are approaching $3.4 million.
Carlee Pierce of Stephenville represented area cowgirls in the barrel race. She was fourth with a time of 14.29 seconds, just 0.2 out of first, and won $7,968.75.
The 10-round event continues with the second performance on Friday night.
