WNFR: Crawley wins saddle bronc, team ropers continue dominance

Sport: (December 5, 2014) — Jacobs Crawley is off to a strong start in his fourth consecutive Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

The Stephenville saddle bronc rider won Friday night’s second go-round at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, scoring 82.5 points to claim the first-place prize of $19,002.40 and move into second in the average.

Crawley was coming off a split of third and fourth in the opening round. He’s scored 163 points on two rides.

Turtle Powell and Dakota Kirchenschlager have been white-hot to start the team roping, winning each of the opening two rounds in dominant fashion. With Powell, of Stephenville, heading and Kirchenschlager, of Morgan Mill heeling, the tandem roped their calf in a blistering 3.8 seconds Friday. That was seven-tenths faster than anyone else a night after they won the opening performance by half a second.

At 7.8 seconds on two head, Powell and Kirchenschlager sit atop the average by 6.3 seconds over Clay Tryan of Lipan and Jade Corkill of Huckabay. Tryan and Corkill were fourth Friday with a time of 9.40.

Bobby Mote and Carlee Pierce finished just outside the money. Mote, from Huckabay, was fifth in bareback riding with a score of 82.5. Pierce was sixth with a time of 14.81 in the barrel race. The Stephenville cowgirl is fourth in the average.

After finishing first and fourth, respectively, in Thursday’s opening round, both Marty Yates and Cody Ohl missed their calves in in the tie-down roping Friday.

Eight performances remain and will continue nightly, as will updates from The Flash.
