WNFR: Yates, three others from Erath County score round four wins

Sport: (December 7, 2014) — Erath County cowboys captured three go-round titles in the fourth performance of the 2014 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas Sunday night.

Marty Yates, 20, won the tie-down roping for the second time in his first WNFR with an impressive run lasting just 6.7 seconds. He won by a wide margin, seven-tenths of a second faster than Cade Swor in second.

The Stephenville cowboy and 2013 graduate of Huckabay High School also won in the opening round Thursday night and was in the money in sixth during Saturday’s round three. He has won more than $41,000 through four rounds.

“To come out here and win two out of the first four rounds is awesome,” said Yates in a televised interview following the round. “It’s a dream come true.”

Bobby Mote of Huckabay split first and second in the bareback riding, making the money for the third straight night and holding his No. 2 position in the average. Mote scored 84 points on Rylee’s Raisin Cain to win just more than $17 for the round and swell his four-round earnings to more than $33,000.

Luke Brown, header of Stephenville, and Kollin VonAhn, heeler from Huckabay, teamed up to win the team roping in an impressive 3.6 seconds, three-tenths faster than any other tandem. Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves joined header Dustin Bird in second place with a 3.9. Also from Huckabay, heeler Jim Ross Cooper and heading partner Brandon Beers split fourth and fifth.

Turtle Powell of Stephenville and Dakota Kirchenschlager of Morgan Mill won the first two rounds in the team roping, but dropped out of the lead in the average with tough outings Saturday and Sunday. They posted a 19.10 in round four, dropping them to fourth in the average.

Second in the team roping average are Clay Tryan of Lipan and Jade Corkill of Huckabay. They entered the WNFR ranked first in the world and have were in the money in each of the first three rounds before a 9.60 Sunday night.

Brittany Fleck of Desdemona found herself just one-hundredth of a second out of the round four money. She ran a time of 14.01. Fifth was 13.99 and sixth was 14.00.

The rodeo reaches its midway point with Monday night’s round five. Fans can watch a delayed broadcast beginning at 9 p.m. CST on CBS Sports.
