Sport: STEPHENVILLE (January 9, 2015) — Stephenville proved it could win an uptempo battle when Darian Brown poured in 18 points and Zoey Kendall added 16 in a 59-42 thumping of Robinson at Gandy Gym Friday evening.

Josh Nowell added 12 for the Yellow Jackets, who dominated on the offensive boards and with points in the paint.

The Jackets finished the first half on a 10-2 run to turn a 24-21 deficit into a 31-26 lead at the intermission. They added the first four points of the second half for a nine-point advantage, and finished the third quarter ahead 43-31 after four straight points inside by Kendall.

Nowell began the fourth with an old-fashion 3-point play for a 14-point lead, and Tyler Giffin hit two free throws to push it to 16. Stephenville ultimately led 51-33 following a 3-pointer by Brown with 4:51 remaining.

Robinson began the game hot from the arc, hitting four first-quarter 3-pointers. Back-to-back buckets by Nowell and Kendall gave Stephenville an 18-17 edge after trailing 14-9 early in the period. The Rockets beat the buzzer with a basket in the paint for a 19-18 advantage after one.

Stephenville responded with suffocating zone defense, and Robinson’s outside shooters cooled off in a second period that saw the Rockets score just seven points. It was more of the same in the third when they netted just five.

The performance was right on time for a Stephenville team that is idle Tuesday and opens District 6-4A play at home next Friday, January 16, against Mineral Wells.
