Shooting woes cost Honeybees in district opener at Brownwood

Sport: (January 12, 2015) — A 12-point margin in the third quarter and 24 points from Trejouir Wilson were enough for No. 20 Brownwood to upend No. 15 Stephenville in a District 6-4A opener at BHS Friday.

The Honeybees look to get back on track when they break from district play and host 3A Cisco in Gandy Gym at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday following a 5 p.m. start to sub-varsity play.

Stephenville resumes league action with the first district boys-girls doubleheader against Mineral Wells at home on Friday.

The Bees led 19-16 until the disastrous third quarter, when they were outscored 17-5.

“We just couldn’t hit any shots,” said Stephenville head coach Alan Thorpe, whose club shot only 28 percent compared to 44 percent by Brownwood. “We weren’t shooting it real well in the first half, but at least we made a few outside shots. In the second half we couldn’t hit anything.

The Bees made three of their first five from outside the arc, including two by Breanna Wooley, but they finished just 5-25 from downtown, just 20 percent.

The Lady Lions out-rebounding the Honeybees 29-21, though Stephenville did grab 11 offensive boards.

Bayleigh Chaviers led Stephenville with 11 points. Lariat Larner aded eight, Wooley and Cassidy Cline each finished with six, Lyndi Graham had four, Kali Smith three and Ali Thorpe one.
