STEPHENVILLE (January 12, 2015) — Tarleton State University will welcome Dr. Lara Walter West, guest organist, in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21, on the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium stage. The performance is free and open to the public.

West, a native of Stephenville and daughter of retired Tarleton faculty members Mary and Dr. Rueben Walter, will perform on the university’s Waggener Memorial Pipe Organ for the concert. Selections include pieces by Hugo Distler, César Franck, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Böhm.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and seating is general admission for the approximately one-hour recital.

As a child, West attended musical and theatrical performances at Tarleton’s Wells Fine Arts Center and, at the same time, began developing an interest in church music at Faith Lutheran Church in Stephenville.

Upon graduating from Stephenville High School, West attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, earning a bachelor of arts degree in 1998 and then studying church music in Rottenburg, Germany, the following year. West attended graduate school at the University of Kansas, earning master of music and doctor of musical arts degrees in church music. Her lecture-recital focused on the organ works of Distler.

West is currently a lecturer at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., where she directs the Liturgical Choir and teaches music appreciation, world music, functional keyboard and organ. She also serves as music director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lawrence, Kan.
