Stephenville teams win Friday pool games in Challenge of Champions

STEPHENVILLE (January 16, 2015) — So far, so good for the home teams.

Stephenville’s varsity soccer clubs made it through their first two pool games unscathed in the Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions at Stephenville Soccer Complex Friday.

Aaron Veloz ripped off four goals in a game to highlight a pair of shutout victories by the Yellow Jackets (3-0). They beat Weatherford JV and Lorena by identical 5-0 scores.

Felipe Espinoza, Ivan Cabrera, Jose De Saracho and Chris Aguilar assisted on Veloz’ goals against Weatherford JV, then Espinoza finished the scoring off a dime from Elston.

Tino Rocha turned a hat trick with three goals against Lorena. Espinoza had a goal and an assist, Veloz contributed two assists and Abhilekh Adhikari scored a goal. De Saracho and Brayden Perry had assists.

The Honeybees scored five goals in the opening 10 minutes on their way to an 8-0 win in their tournament opener against Waco Connally. Bayleigh Chaviers and Savannah Alford scored two goals each.

The test was tougher in Stephenville’s second game, but Brooke Sanderford knocked in the game-winner late in the second half of a 2-1 victory over Lorena.

The Bees conclude pool play against Weatherford at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Girls semifinals start at 2 p.m. with the championship and consolation matches to follow at 3:30.

The Jackets have two pool matches remaining – Marble Falls at 9 a.m. and Waco University JV at noon. With no semifinals, the boys championship and consolation games kick off at 3:30 p.m.

Stephenville’s JV boys are also competing the tournament, falling to Weatherford and Marble Falls Friday. They conclude pool play with Waco University at 10:30 a.m. and Joshua at 1:30 p.m.
