(January 20, 2015) — For three quarters, Stephenville stood up to the tough test of taking on Class 4A’s No. 2 team on the road.
But the fourth quarter – and the win – belonged to Abilene Wylie.
The Lady Bulldogs actually began their comeback late in the third, scoring the last three points to trim Stephenville’s six-point lead to 32-29 entering the fourth. They weren’t done, scoring the first eight of the fourth for a 37-32 lead.
Of course, Stephenville wasn’t done either, responding with eight of the next 10 to lead 40-39 before Wylie’s second decisive run, a 9-2 push to claim a 48-42 victory in District 6-4A play. The Lady Bulldogs are first in the league, and Stephenville is third.
Brittany Brewer 21 points to lead Wylie. After netting just four before intermission, Brewer exploded for seven in the third and 10 in the fourth to lead the comeback.
Stephenville had two double-digit scorers – Lyndi Graham with 14 and Kali Smith with 12. Cassidy Cline scored nine, Lariat Larner , Bayleigh Chaviers and Bethanie Bouchey each added two and Robbi Elliott had one.
Stephenville committed three pivotal turnovers in a one-minute span late in the fourth, including a five-second inbounding violation when officials didn’t hear head coach Alan Thorpe pleading for a timeout.
“We played really well, we just didn’t make the plays we had to make in the end,” said Thorpe. “But this is the way we have to play to win in this league and win in the playoffs. We just have to finish better.”
Wylie’s boys beat Stephenville 50-29 to conclude the 6-4A doubleheader. Stephenville hosts Graham on Friday.
