STEPHENVILLE (January 21, 2015) — Tarleton State University will host its third annual Brass Day, a daylong workshop for high school musicians, on Saturday, Jan. 31, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

The event, hosted by the Department of Fine Arts and the university’s bands, will feature master classes, faculty showcases and opportunities for young musicians to work with professional musicians in a small group environment. The day will end with an evening concert featuring the Gaudete Brass Quintet, including Ryan Berndt and Bill Baxtresser on trumpet, Julia Filson on horn, Paul Von Hoff on trombone and Scott Tegge on tuba.

Founded in 2004, the Gaudete Brass Quintet is committed to presenting “serious brass chamber music through compelling concerts, commissioning new works and adventurous recordings.” The quintet has performed at Merkin Hall and Symphony Space in New York City and Millennium Park in Chicago, and has since recorded three albums since its inception.

New to this year’s Brass Day is the first annual Young Person’s Brass Competition, which is open to all brass students enrolled in a high school band program. The contest begins at 1:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

“Brass Day is a great event for our students and the community,” said Dr. Brian Walker, assistant professor of trumpet. “To have a high-caliber group such as Gaudete Brass Quintet on campus is a wonderful opportunity. Tarleton students will get a chance to learn from each of the members of this group and benefit from Gaudete’s professional experience.”

The Gaudete Brass Quintet’s concert begins at 5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Fine Arts Center. Day passes are $20 and can be purchased by contacting Brian Walker at 254-968-0744. Tickets for the concert only are $10 each and can be purchased at the box office the day of the concert beginning at 4 p.m.
