STEPHENVILLE (January 23, 2014) — For the first time since 2008, Stephenville is searching for a new head football coach and director of athletics, and it will be at least three weeks before a hire is made.

Joe Gillespie announced Friday morning he has accepted a job coaching linebackers for the University of Tulsa, where former Stephenville assistant and Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery is the new head coach.

Stephenville superintendent Matt Underwood told The Flash Today Friday afternoon he will try to have the opening posted by next Wednesday, and that it would be open for three weeks.

“We will form a committee and we will undergo a full search process,” said Underwood moments before an unrelated called meeting of the SISD trustees Friday afternoon. “We will look at any internal applicants and also at outside applicants.”

Underwood said the committee will include community members, parents, teachers, administrators and possibly athletic staff representatives and board members.

“The makeup of the committee has not been nailed down, but it will be something to that extent,” said Underwood.

Gillespie graduated from Stephenville in 1990, returned as an assistant coach in 1995 and was promoted to head coach and athletic director in 2008. He was 72-13 in three seasons, including 22-6 in the playoffs, and in 2012 led the Yellow Jackets to the school’s fifth state title in the sport.
