Huckabay boys cruise, girls win nail biter

Sport: (January 27, 2015) — Huckabay’s boys scored 30 points in the first quarter, while Gordon scored 30 in the game.

It didn’t get any closer from the opening period as the Indians (14-10, 4-0) crushed the Longhorns 83-30 to hold maintain their share of the District 18-A lead and setup Friday’s pivotal rivalry showdown against Lingleville at HHS.

Outside shooting highlighted the Indians’ easy win as they knocked down 11 3-pointers. The onslaught started early with Gavin Fuentes and JW Weiss combining for 24 points in the opening quarter. Fuentes finished with 22 and Weiss 13.

Cade Little came on strong later in the game, hitting three 3-pointers on his way to 10 points in the third. He finished with 17. Jordan Ritchey added eight and Tyler Stegall four. Jason Stewart, Matthew Haley and Gage Dowell scored three each while Levi Dowell, Ky Bray and Taylor Lopez contributed two apiece.

The Lady Indians (17-7, 4-2) ground out a much tougher win, edging Gordon 31-29.

Huckabay connected on just nine field goals all night, but went 9-10 from the line to score just enough.

Tiffany Lopez had four of those field goals on her way to 12 points. Bailey Woolridge scored five, while Presli Bray and Makayla Metsgar scored four each in the fourth, combining for eight of Huckabay’s 10 in the final period. Taylor Lowe contributed two.

Huckabay and Lingleville tipoff Friday’s varsity doubleheader with girls at 6:30 p.m. The boys will follow at approximately 8.
