STEPHENVILLE (February 9, 2015) — The Tarleton State University Police Department will offer a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) women’s self-defense course beginning on Monday, Feb. 23. The free, 12-hour course in four sessions is open to female students, faculty, staff and the general public.

Course dates are Feb. 23 and 24, and March 2 and 3, from 6-9 p.m.

RAD instructors will focus on education and awareness, prevention, risk reduction and the avoidance of assault and rape. The RAD system is dedicated to teaching defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault by using easy, effective and proven self-defense and martial arts tactics.

Course instructors are Detective Kristie Bint and Officer Amanda Miller, both of the Tarleton Police Department. Participants are asked to meet in the foyer of the Kinesiology area of Wisdom Gym on Feb. 23. From there, instructors will take participants to the class.

“Our goal is to provide women with the knowledge and skills to make educated decisions about their personal safety, because safety and survival in today’s world require a definite course of action,” said Detective Bint. “We provide effective options by teaching women to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well-being.”

Minimum age for participants is 13. Due to the popularity of the course, students are encouraged to sign up early.

To register for the spring semester RAD course, contact Bint at 254-968-9565 or email bint@tarleton.edu. Additional information is available online at: www.tarleton.edu/police/community/rad.html.
