Berta was known as Mawmaw to her family and friends. Berta was known for her open home and here open heart. She was a Christian and attended the Hico Church of Christ for over 50 years, also serving as a Bible school teacher, and wrote the church news. She was known for her love of her church family. In the early years of raising children, she and Derwood ran a dairy before owning and running Polk Cleaners in Hico. Berta was an Avon sales representative for over 30 years and even after she could no longer drive, her customers would come to her house, continuing a devotion to her customers as they were to her. She was known as a 42 player, for a good cup of coffee and for her ability to whip up a plate of peanut butter fudge in no time flat! She was active in school functions when her children were young like PTA. Berta could easily hold the record for the most sporting events ever attended, even attending sporting events in her wheel chair as her health declined. She never missed a Dallas Mavericks game and Dirk was her all-time favorite. She so deeply loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in-laws were not in-laws, they were family. Everyone was special in her eyes and she made you believe you could do anything, always saw the good in every child and many Hico children shared a meal at her table. Berta loved everything her family did and always had the most encouraging words. She was a joy to so many lives, Proverbs 31:28 “Her Children will rise up and call her blessed; her husband also praises her.”
