STEPHENVILLE (February 24, 2015) — The Tarleton State University Bass Club team of Marshall Hughes and Tanner Crim took third place at the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference event on Lake Texoma on Feb. 21, with four bass weighing in at 11 pounds, 2 ounces.
The third place finish earned the Tarleton Bass Club duo $500 and advanced them to the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Championship Tournament. Those finishing among the top 15 teams at the Lake Texoma fishing tournament will compete at the championship event slated for Oct. 17-18, 2015 at Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees in northeast Oklahoma.
Crim, a native of Devine, Texas, is a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering technology at Tarleton. He has fished approximately 10 tournaments with Hughes, a senior animal production major from Nederland, Texas, but the Lake Texoma tourney has been the duo’s highest-placing so far.
“We fished two spots on Texoma up north towards the river past the second bridge,” said Crim. “The first spot we were throwing a jig on a long point that had rocks and a submerged boat dock. There, we caught one fish, a five-and-a-half pound ‘kicker fish’ on a Jig-X green pumpkin with a net bait paca crawl. We caught another bass there, using a shad-colored robo worm at a depth of 22 to 25 feet in the first spot.
“Then we ran 400 yards across the bay to our second spot which was a cement slab submerged in 24 feet of water,” Crim added. “We caught our last two fish while ‘video game fishing’ using a drop shot and the robo worms.”
Fishing in 18 mph north winds and temperatures peaking at just 46 degrees, Crim and Hughes also faced a choppy Lake Texoma with four-foot rollers. “It wasn’t exactly pleasant out on the lake that day,” he said.
This past weekend’s top five placing also helped to keep the Tarleton Bass Club ranked at No. 16 among 348 teams in the nation, following a fifth place finish by Crim and Hughes at Sam Rayburn Reservoir on Jan. 24. In that tournament the anglers hauled in five bass weighing 14 pounds, 12 ounces earning them a $500 prize and points toward their regular-season total.
The two anglers are supported by team sponsors Fitzgerald Rods, Santone Lures, Tour Edge Lures, Lucas Motor Oil and Outdoor Specialties Boats.
Tarleton was represented by six, two-member duos at the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference tournament at Lake Texoma. Duos of Tarleton Bass Club members included: Justin Seeton and Stetson Overton, Jordan Wallace and Zachary Montalvo, Garrett Harris and Logan Wilson, James McCaleb and Robert Ramsey, and Zach Ziober and Preston Walling.
The Central Oklahoma University team of Colten Hutson and Brock Enmeier won first place at the Lake Texoma tournament with a five-bass limit weighing 13 pounds, 15 ounces. Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Mitchell Decker and Dalton Warrington took second place with two bass weighing 11 pounds, 4 ounces.
FLW College Fishing teams compete in qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences—Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. The top 15 teams from each regular-season tourney will qualify for one of five conference championship events. The top 10 teams from each of the five conference championships will advance to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship
