STEPHENVILLE ( February 23, 2015) — Three honorees were recognized by Tarleton State University President F. Dominic Dottavio as 2015 Legacy Award recipients during the university’s annual Gala, Saturday, Feb. 21.

The President’s Legacy Awards recognize individuals and supporters who have exhibited Tarleton’s core values of integrity, leadership, tradition, civility, excellence and service. Recipients are selected by the university president to exemplify those core values, which are embraced by students, faculty and staff as models to be emulated.

Recipients of the President’s 2015 Legacy Awards are: The Walton Group of Companies, Tradition of Service Award; Dr. O.H. “Bud” Frazier, Excellence through Leadership Award; and A. Dwain Mayfield, the Civility with Integrity Award.

The President’s Legacy Award for Tradition of Service recognizes the selfless giving of an individual or corporation that has an extraordinary impact across the university and exemplifies the philanthropic ideals of the university’s founder, John Tarleton.

The Walton Group of Companies, a family-owned, multi-national real estate investment and development firm, donated 80 acres to enable the university to expand its Fort Worth operations on a permanent campus.

The Walton Group takes a long-term approach to land development, building communities for today and tomorrow. “Much like John Tarleton’s original gift, The Walton Group’s donation is a truly transformational gift that will solidify the university’s impact on the face of higher education in Fort Worth and Tarrant County forever,” said President Dottavio.

Walton CEO Bill Doherty stated that promoting education is a theme he learned as a child, and this belief will allow generations of students to live out their dreams of earning a quality education. Accepting the award on behalf of The Walton Group was John Vick, regional president, and Matt Robinson, general manager of Walton Development and Management, Inc.

“Walton is incredibly honored to receive Tarleton’s prestigious Legacy Award and we thank everyone on the selection committee,” said Vick. “We have had the pleasure of working with Tarleton to create the new campus in Fort Worth along the Chisholm Trail Parkway and we look forward to continuing to work with them to help make a great university even greater.”

The President’s Legacy Award for Excellence through Leadership recognizes significant distinction and accomplishment in his or her field and achievements that have brought honor and credit to Tarleton.

Distinguished surgeon, scientist and academician Dr. O. H. “Bud” Frazier, world-renowned for his research and development of new cardiovascular surgical techniques, including the development of artificial heart and circulatory assist devices, received the award.

Dr. Frazier has received numerous awards and honors, and has been named to several medical and scientific advisory boards. A native of Stephenville, he has authored or co-authored numerous publications. From 1968 to 1970, Dr. Frazier served in the U.S. Army with the rank of Flight Surgeon-Captain in the 48th Assault Helicopter Company, Vietnam. He was decorated with the Combat Flight Medal, Vietnamese Navy Medal, and the Vietnamese Distinguished Service Medal.

After attending Tarleton, Dr. Frazier earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Texas at Austin and a doctor of medicine from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. His father, the late Oscar H. Frazier, was an associate professor of mathematics at Tarleton, remembered as a highly successful track coach between 1925 and 1965.

The President’s Legacy Award for Civility with Integrity recognizes significant contributions to the betterment of society through character, forthrightness, honorable actions and commitment to the well-being of others.

A native Texan, A. Dwain Mayfield graduated from Tarleton with an associate’s degree; from Texas A&M University with bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering, and earned an MBA from Texas Christian University.

Mayfield joined General Dynamics in Fort Worth in 1961 as a design engineer, eventually becoming the vice president of program development for the Fort Worth Division and later vice president of marketing initiatives.

Mayfield has made a lasting mark on Tarleton through his support of students, scholarship and philanthropy, and serving the university in volunteer capacities. He and his wife, Lynda, established an endowed scholarship in engineering. Mayfield sits on the College of Science & Technology’s Dean’s Circle, leads the Tarleton Foundation, Inc. as president, and teaches as advisor-extraordinaire for the Tarleton Aeronautical Team—a student-led initiative that has achieved national and international recognition during competition thanks to Mayfield’s guidance and encouragement.
