STEPHENVILLE (March 2, 2015) — Before this season, no freshman for Tarleton State men’s basketball program had earned a player of the week honor from the Lone Star Conference.

Now, Nosa Ebomwonyi has done it twice.

The 6-4 guard from Pflugerville earned his second LSC Defensive Player of the Week award in three weeks Monday after helping Tarleton rout McMurry and Texas A&M-Commerce, with the latter win securing the program’s first outright LSC regular-season championship.

Ebomwonyi went toe-to-toe with LaDon Carnegie Sunday night, helping to shut out the Texas A&M-Commerce guard who entered the contest averaging 15.9 points per game. Tarleton won 68-48, holding A&M-Commerce to 33 points below its average of 81 per game.

“We emphasize defense it’s a lot, it’s the key for us,” Ebomwonyi told The Flash Today following Sunday night’s key victory by the Texans, the top team in the South Central Region. “I knew I was coming into a good program, but I never could have known my freshman year would go so well or that I would be such a big part of so much success. I’m just blessed to have coaches who have enough confidence to make me such a big part of everything so soon.”

Ebomwonyi collected nine rebounds and three steals during the week, helping Tarleton hold opponents to just 39.4 percent shooting and an average of just 53 points over the two games. The Texans lead the LSC in scoring defense, surrendering 61 points per game for the season.

It’s the fourth consecutive week a Tarleton player has been selected for the defensive honor, and the sixth straight week for a Texan to be recognized for offense or defense.

Tarleton takes the No. 1 seed into this week’s LSC Championship tournament at Allen Event Center. The Texans face No. 8 seed Eastern New Mexico at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, and a win would advance them to the semifinals for a Friday showdown with Texas A&M-Commerce or West Texas A&M.
