STEPHENVILLE (March 15, 2015) — Angelo State, with its strong contingency of Division I transfers, continues to roll in South Central Region Championship play, reaching the Sweet 16 with a 66-49 victory over fellow Lone Star Conference member Midwestern State Sunday night at Wisdom Gym.

The Rams are in the ‘Sweet 16’ for the first time in their NCAA era, and will play for a spot in the Elite 8 Tuesday evening against Tarleton State or Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The Rams scored 24 of 30 points after trailing 10-3 early on, and were largely in control the rest of the way. Midwestern did pull within eight on a 3-pointer by Xavier Blackburn with 17:19 to play, but four Rams combined for the next eight points and a 47-31 lead. MSU got no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Senior point guard Chris Jones, a North Texas transfer, had 17 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Rams. DeMario Mayfield, a senior move-in who once averaged double figures at Division I Charlotte, also scored 17, while Marsell Holden, a Morehead State transfer, added 12. The Rams shot 53.3 percent from the floor and were 42.9 percent from the arc.

Midwestern, which lost in Wisdom Gym for the first time over the last two seasons, was led by Bretson McNeal with 16. Blackburn added 12, but it wasn’t enough thanks to just 27.4 percent shooting including just 20 percent from the arc.
