(March 22, 2015) — The future looks bright for Stephenville girls basketball.

The Stephenville Comets are state runners up in the 12U division of Texas Amateur Athletic Federation girls basketball, falling to Texas City in the championship Sunday afternoon in Waco.

“We had to fight back after being down 16-2, and we got within three before we ran out of gas and they pulled away from us,” said Comets head coach Roderic Brooks, a veteran with vast youth state tournament success, in a phone interview following the championship. “All the credit goes to Texas City, they have a great team. Their state champs for a reason. But I’m also proud of our team and everything they achieved this year. The girls worked hard, were a lot of fun to be around and work with and had a great year.”

The Comets finished 20-2 with their only losses coming in pool play and the championship of this weekend’s state tournament.

“Texas City had eight players and they didn’t lose anything when they went to the bench,” Brooks said of the championship loss. “We only had six girls, so once we used all that energy to get back in the game by halftime, we didn’t have much left in the tank.”

Team members include Victoria Wysong, Tori Garcia, Asia Hays, Destiny Cook, Bella Mahone, Cassi Cerrillo and manager Amara Kimble.

“I’m proud of all of them,” said Brooks. “When you only have six, everyone gets to contribute, and it took the efforts of all these girls as a cohesive unit for us to get this far.”
