(March 24, 2015) — Fourth inning home runs by Nadine Arredondo and Madi Crew weren’t enough to dig Stephenville out of a big hole against Brownwood in Monday’s districts softball opener delayed three days by rain and moved to McCleskey Field in Stpehenville City Park.

Stephenville trailed 10-3 before Arredondo lifted a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Crew stepped up two batters later – after a single by Rainey Boase – and launched a two-run shot to left.

The lead was cut to 10-6, but Stephenville could get no closer. Brownwood was in control of the onset, with a two-run second leading to a 3-0 lead.

Emily Miller drew a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and came around to score on a single by Boase in the bottom of the second, cutting the Honeybee deficit to two.

Brownwood tacked on four more in the third, but Stephenville inched closer with two in the bottom half of the inning.

Kali Smith and Morgan Diciccio each drew walks then advanced to third and second a ground out by Julia Flores. Sierra Varnado flew out to the short stop out on the outfield grass, with Smith tagging up to score. Shaffer drove a double into centerfield to bring Diciccio across the plate, making it 7-3.

Brownwood scored three in the top of the fourth and added a final run after Stephenville’s big answer in the bottom of the fourth.

Boase, a freshman, was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Arredondo was 2-for-3 while driving in a run and scoring another.
