(April 4, 2015) — This time, extra innings came out in the favor of Stephenville.

In their second straight eight-inning battle to begin play in 6-4A, the Honeybees scored twice in the top of the eighth and made it stand for a tough 4-2 road win over Abilene Wylie Friday.

Nadine Arredondo and Sami Shaffer lined one-out singles to left field before Arredondo reached third when Emily Miller hit into a fielder’s choice that retried Shaffer at second. Madi Crew then unloaded the game-winner, a hard ground ball that bounced into left field to plate Arredondo.

A fourth single to left, this one by Alexus Duckett, brought Miller home for an insurance run that freshman pitcher Julia Flores would not need.

Flores retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth, recording her eighth strikeout between line outs to Shaffer at short stop and Miller at first base. Flores allowed two runs on six hits and walked three.

Leadoff hitter Kali Smith was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored the game’s opening run for Stephenville. Arredondo and Shaffer were also 2-for-4. Shaffer had a triple, as the pitchers’ duel yielded only one extra-base hit to each team.

The victory was right on time for a Stephenville team that lost a two-run lead in its district opener against Mineral Wells, a game the Bees lost in eight innings.

The stage was all set for a bad case of deja vu, but when Wylie tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Wylie’s only extra-base hit was a two-out triple that set the stage for the tying run.

Smith singled to begin the game, stole second with two outs and scored on a single by Arredondo.

Wylie tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the third, but the Honeybees, who never trailed, took the lead again in the top of the fourth when Shaffer tripled and scored on a passed ball.

Stephenville returns home to McCleskey Field Tuesday for a 7 p.m. district duel with Graham.
