STEPHENVILLE (April 9, 2015) — Tarleton State University is rallying around one of its own.

A bone marrow drive is taking place today – Thursday, April 9 – in the second floor of the Tarleton Student Center, to benefit former Tarleton student Jayd Bivens. Donations will be accepted until 1 p.m. through the organization “Be the Match Registry,” a national marrow donor program.

“I want to do this for him because I feel like he would do this for anybody else,” said Stephenville native and Tarleton student-athlete Aaron Donahue, a friend of Bivens. “You can only say or do so much, but we want to take advantage of this opportunity to help him.”

Once a vibrant part of the Tarleton community, Bivens, who majored in psychology and was involved in College Life, defeated one type of cancer – Ewing’s Sarcoma – only to be diagnosed with another. He suffers from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL, and is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

“We had a group of four or five guys that all hung out in college, and Jayd was the best of them. He’s a dependable, honest, great guy to be around. He’s a great listener and is always there for his friends,” Donahue said. “When this happened we looked around and said, ‘Wow, out of all our friends, Jayd deserves this the least.'”

So now Donahue and others rally around their stricken friend.

“I know he would be the first to help someone else if this were the other way around,” said Donahue. “This is the least we can do.”
