Pitching of Renfro highlights Tarleton’s split at ASU

(April 13, 2015) — A two-hit gem by pitcher Trevor Renfro was the biggest highlight for Tarleton State (16-17, 10-13) while splitting four Lone Star Conference games at Angelo State (26-12, 15-11) last weekend in San Angelo.

Renfro allowed just a run on two hits while striking out eight and issuing just one walk in seven innings in the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader swept by Tarleton. Hunter Houston earned his second save of the day and fifth of the season when he struck out the side in the eighth.

Tarleton won the game – the third of the series – 2-1. It was scheduled for seven innings, but took eight for the Texans to push a second run across on an RBI single by Evan Robinson that plated Dalton Weeks. Robinson plated Weeks with a sacrifice fly to begin the scoring in the third.

Paxton DeLaGarza hit his second home run of the series in the seventh inning, the only run ASU would score.

The pitching was was also strong when Tarleton won the opening game of the Saturday doubleheader, 3-1. Kyle Gottardy surrendered just a run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over the first five innings. Houston pitched two innings of shutout relief to earn the save.

Alec Humphreys had an RBI single to right in the first, and Peter McMahon lined a two-run double to left center in the second, providing all Tarleton’s scoring.

ASU shut out Tarleton 6-0 on Friday and turned to offense for an 11-4 win on Sunday.

Steve Naemark struck out six and allowed just two hits and a walk in seven innings on Friday, while DeLaGarza and J.C. Snyder each hit solo home runs for the Rams.

Newton Norkeh had an RBI double and a solo home run while Derek Tyner belted a 2-run homer on Sunday, when Tarleton committed five errors and allowed two unearned runs. ASU scored three times on sacrifice flies.

The series leaves ASU alone in third in the LSC, while Tarleton is alone in fourth 3.5 games behind Rams. Texas A&M-Kingsville (24-15, 18-8) and West Texas A&M (25-14, 16-10) are first and second.

Tarleton is on the road again this weekend, visiting LSC rival Cameron for a single contest at 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
