(April 15, 2015) — Nadine Arredondo hit a grand slam in the first inning and Sami Shaffer belted a game-winning three-run homer in the sixth Stephenville prevailed 8-5 over Early in a non-district softball game at McCleskey Field Tuesday.

The Honeybees never trailed after Arredondo’s big blast made it 4-1 early on. Early closed its gap to one with two runs in the top of the third, but Stephenville responded with an unearned in the bottom of the inning for a 5-3 advantage.

The Lady Longhorns tied it up again with two runs in the sixth, but Shaffer’s homer was the final answer needed for Stephenville, which had more runs than hits – six – thanks to largely to three Early errors and partially to a pair of walks.

A pair of freshmen handled pitching duties for Stephenville. Rainey Boase surrendered five runs – three earned – on eight hits while striking out eight and walking two over 5-2/3 innings. Regular starter Julia Flores came on in the bottom of the sixth and closed the door while striking out three over a perfect 1-1/3 innings.

Stephenville returns to 6-4A play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mineral Wells. The junior varsity teams square off at 5:30 p.m.
