(May 7, 2015) — Tarleton State begins defense of its Lone Star Conference tournament championship Thursday when the Texans return to Kingsville where they dropped two of three just last weekend.
The four-team, double-elimination 2015 LSC Baseball Championship at Nolan Ryan Field begins at 11 a.m. Thursday with No. 2 seed West Texas A&M and No. 3 seed Angelo State. Tarleton is the No. 4 seed and faces No. 1 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at 3 p.m. The Texans dropped two of three to TAMUK last weekend.
The opening two games set the stage for the following schedule to unfold:
Game 3: Loser of 1 vs. Loser of 2, Thursday at 7 p.m.
Game 4: Winner of 1 vs. Winner of 2, Friday at 3 p.m.
Game 5: Loser of 4 vs. Winner of 3, Friday at 7 p.m.
Game 6: Winner of 4 vs. Winner of 5, Saturday at 12 p.m.
Game 7: If Necessary, Friday at 4 p.m.
Tarleton had seven athletes honored in the annual LSC postseason banquet Wednesday, including first-team all-conference catcher Jonathan Schmitz. The redshirt junior hit .344 in 38 games and is the 13th first-team selection in seven seasons under head coach Bryan Conger.
Four Texans – seniors Colton Burleson, Kevin Meredith and Evan Robinson and junior Alec Humphreys – were second-team all-conference picks. Burleson had three wins and 23 strikeouts in an injury-shortened campaign, Meredith hit .29 with six home runs and 30 runs batted in and Evan Robinson made 115 defensive assists with a .942 fielding percentage this year to become Tarleton’s all-time career assists leader. Humphreys batted .310 with 16 runs batted in.
Dalton Weeks and Eythan Lenz represent Tarleton on the academic-all-conference roster. Weeks, a professional and relational communications major, hit .276 and has a 3.73 grade point average. Lenz, a business administration major, posted a 3.63 earned run average in 13 relief appearances and has a 3.50 ERA.
