STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State track and field had 16 student-athletes honored among the best in the South Central region when the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its annual all-region teams.
“Obviously it’s very well deserved,” said Tarleton head coach Pat Ponder. “They worked hard, put the time in and it’s nice to see them rewarded for it with these honors.”
On the women’s side, Tarleton had six TexAnns represented over four different events. Euphemia Edem was an all-region honoree in the long jump and the triple jump while Sarah Vann earned the honors in the pole vault. Both athletes are school record holders in their respective events.
The No. 7 TexAnn 4x400m relay comprised of LaDaria Nelson, DeAijha Hicks-Boyce, Leslie Zupanicand Jasmine Owens rounded out the All-Region honors for the women – Nelson, Hicks-Boyce, Zupanic and Owens broke the school record in a second-place persformance at the LSC championships clocking a 3:42.15.
On the men’s side, Chase Rathke (1500m), Terrance Gross (400m) and Randall Kadlacek in the 400m hurdles were recognized among the men’s individual runners.
Gross was also a part of the men’s mile relay team who earned the honors, joining Gilson Umunnakwe, Clarencio Guerrero and Cameron Krc – Gross, Krc, Guerrero and Umunnakwe broke the school record in a gold medal performance at the LSC championships clocking 3:08.53.
Rounding out the Texan honorees were Davene Carter in the high jump and Kenny Odunaiya in the shot put.
The top five individuals in each event from each region earned the All-Region distinction; in addition to each of the members of the regions’ top three relay teams.
The regions used for this award match those used during the cross country season, and student-athletes must come from USTFCCCA member institutions.
All 16 of the Tarleton honorees have hit NCAA provisional marks in their respective races and will await the decision on the final qualifying list for the national championships Tuesday afternoon.
The 2015 season will conclude May 21-23 in Allendale, Michigan, at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships.
