STEPHENVILLE (May 19, 2015) — South Central Region champ Tarleton State added a fourth name to its men’s basketball recruiting class Tuesday with the signing of junior combo guard Chantz Chambers.

Chambers won’t be making his first tour through the Lone Star Conference. The 5-11 dual-sport athlete began his college career at Angelo State before transferring home to Shreveport (La.) to compete for Bossier-Parrish Community College as a sophomore.

Chambers scored 4.8 points in 10.9 minutes per game as a true freshman at ASU, where he shot 51 percent from the floor and 38 percent from the arc. He reached double digits five times including a season-best 13 points against Northern New Mexico and 10 against Midwestern State in a LSC Championship semifinal.

Chambers also competed in track and field at ASU, reaching nationals in the long jump. He won a Louisiana state championship at Huntington High School in Shreveport, and says he plans to long jump at Tarleton, as well.

Chambers was also a basketball star at Huntington, averaging 16.3 points per game while earning all-state, all-city and all-district honors as a senior.

Chambers led Bossier-Parrish in scoring as a sophomore last season, averaging 16.6 points per game including a season best 30 against Angelina Junior College and 27 against Kilgore College. He ranked in the top 10 in his league in scoring, points per game, field goals made, 3-point field goals made, assists and steals.

“Chantz is a very athletic addition who can play point guard or shooting guard. He has great passing ability off the bounce but also can score from different areas on the court,” said Tarleton associate head coach Chris Reisman. “We really like the tenacity and toughness he brings to the floor. He has a high energy level that is very important to how we want to play.”

Reisman and his father, Tarleton head coach Lonn Reisman, also appreciate that Chambers is familiar with the LSC.

“He understands the Lone Star Conference and the competitiveness you face every night,” Chris Reisman said.

The Reismans guided Tarleton to a modern-era school-record 31 wins and the program’s second NCAA Division II “Final Four” last season. Lonn Reisman has 589 wins at Tarleton, the most of any active Texas college coach at one school.

Chambers is joining a back court that includes returning starter Michael Hardge and backup Deshawn Riddick, both point guards, as well as recruiting signee Louis Baltazar, a 23.6 point per game scorer at Burlington County College in New Jersey.

“It’s all about their program. They have a winning program and they treat their players with respect, love and care but they also push them to be the best they can be,” said Chambers of choosing Tarleton. “They help their players graduate, and even after that, the coaches are still there for them.”

Chambers recalls facing Tarleton while at ASU, and is eager to return to the LSC.

“I really like the atmosphere the Lone Star Conference brings, and Tarleton is always right at the top,” said Chambers, a sports management major. “In track it’s the same way. The talent level of the Lone Star Conference in track is incredible.”

As for basketball, Chambers has big goals the next two years.

“My goal at Tarleton is to win the LSC back-to-back, to compete for a national championship and hopefully to win it,” he said.
