STEPHENVILLE (June 15, 2015) — The five gardens on the fifth annual Keep Stephenville Beautiful Garden Tour are both eclectic and unique, and will be open to the public from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015.

The tour, sponsored by Keep Stephenville Beautiful, was originally scheduled for June 6, but was postponed due to the recent rains and resulting wet yards. However, on Saturday, June 20, Keep Stephenville Beautiful will offer beautiful gardens that might give visitors ideas for their gardens and an opportunity to see new gardens as well as established gardens. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased before the tour at Scott’s Flowers, The Chamber of Commerce, Flowers, Etc.  Green Maker and KSB Board members or they can be purchased the day of the tour at any of the houses on the tour.

The gardens represent several areas of Stephenville. For example, in Golf Country Estates, the beautiful garden of Dan and Sharon Malone (at 127 Sandra Palmer) is anchored on each side with large, majestic old live oak trees.  For the tour, the garden is showing a patriotic theme with plantings and pots of red, white and blue.  A six foot high stone retaining wall with a stone and rock walkway provides areas for other garden plantings and pots.  Rounding a corner the number one green and the upper and lower patios are revealed.  The lower level features a red drift rose garden centered with a yellow knock out rose.  On the patios are pots with junipers along with others showing the same patriotic colors.

The home at 851 Frey is owned by Heather Aguilar and is one of the two houses in the first “Kurb Appeal” Project by Keep Stephenville Beautiful. Here, we added a pergola to the front of the house, new sod, new flower beds, and cleaned up trees and shrubs. Decomposed granite was also used here to create a driveway and a new mailbox was put up. Workers on this project included Heather Aguilar, Keisha Barkmeyer, Keep Stephenville Beautiful, students from Tarleton, and community volunteers Gary Sult and Mark McClinton. Many of the materials used were donated or discounted by several local merchants including Greenmaker, Littlejohns, Sherwin-Williams, Allen Nursery, Ace Hardware and Quick Roofing in Kennedale.

The garden tour at 1461 Highland View has unfortunately been cancelled because of a project they already had contracted for the weekend of the tour. The Copelands were so sorry they needed to cancel but said their garden would be in the middle of the project and would be a mess. They were gracious enough to volunteer their garden for the date earlier in June and KSB is so appreciative.

The Kesha Barkmeyer home at 863 Frey Street is one of the two homes where Keep Stephenville Beautiful worked on their first “Kurb Appeal” Project. Keisha Barkmeyer is a new owner of this house and has been working to fix it up. We helped in the front yard by setting in new sod, establishing new flower beds, trimming up trees and bushes, building new shutters and adding a picket fence to the front. We also created a drive way and side walk with decomposed granite and put up a new mailbox. Workers on this project included Keisha, Keep Stephenville Beautiful members, Heather Aguilar, students from Tarleton, Keisha’s parents, and community volunteers Gary Sult and Mark McClinton. Many of the materials used were donated or discounted by several merchants including Greenmaker, Littlejohns, Sherwin Williams, Allen Nursery, Quick Roofing of Kennendale, and Ace Hardware.

Since the completion of the Cole Residence in 1989, the landscape surrounding this home has been transformed into a beautiful park-like setting. The outdoor living area includes a pool and fountain, a play scape area for the grandchildren and several areas for entertaining guests. One will also find sitting areas under pergolas, an herb garden complete with tasty herbs and an array of beautiful plants that uniquely tie all together making this garden a must see!

The home of Stephany Elliott, located at 1255 Alexander Road, is a version of the HGTV Dream Home 2011. This modern mountain lodge was designed by Vermont architect Paul Rouselle. The home sits on a natural terrace in the middle of 140 acres, surrounded by five major types of trees. It is constructed of native limestone excavated from the property, as well as Douglas fir beams. Landscaping by Karen Richardson includes varieties of Southwestern Yuccas, mountain laurels, ferns, and aromatic sumac to meting a few.

It is suggested that attendees save the Elliott garden on Alexander Highway to the end. In addition to viewing this lovely garden, Keep Stephenville Beautiful will sponsor a “Color Stephenville Beautiful” event. We will have colorful plants and trees that may be purchased so that we can help add color in the city. Plants will include Knock-Out Roses, Crepe Myrtles, a collection of colorful bushes and flowers. This gives residents an opportunity to purchase some plants to enliven their yards and also provide some funds for future projects for Keep Stephenville Beautiful. We appreciate that people in Stephenville and the surrounding area attend this event every year – it provides an opportunity for KSB to raise money to help with their projects. Membership is the other way KSB raises money. All money donated to KSB goes back into the community in the form of beautification projects.
