Essery covers first two bulls for top spot in CNFR average

(June 18, 2015) — Ranger College bull rider Gray Essery could be two rides away from a national championship at the College National Finals Rodeo.

Essery covered both bulls for identical 75.5 scores in slack Monday and Tuesday to lead the average at the 2015 CNFR in Casper, Wyoming. His third ride takes place in the Thursday evening rodeo performance at the Casper Events Center.

Essery, already a lock for the short-go on Saturday, is just half a point ahead of Trasen Jones, who scored 77.5 and 73 in the first two rounds. They are the only competitors to cover each of their first two bulls.

The bulls have dominated the cowboys overall at the CNFR with only 11 successful rides out of 88 attempts.

Ranger is also represented by a pair of team ropers. Wesley Thorp is heeling for header Aaron Macy of Weatherford College, and the duo is tied for 11th with a time of 6.2 seconds and a no score. Ranger header Austin Barber and partner Logan Harkey of West Texas A&M posted two no scores and a 12.4 to register 19th.
