Stephenville qualified through the McGregor State Qualifier Tournament and is in the championship for the 11th time. The Yellow Jackets have qualified four straight summers since falling from Division I when they were classified as what is now 5A to Division II as a member of the current 4A. They reached state in Division I six straight summers from 2005-10, making this their 10th trip in 11 years.

The Yellow Jackets took the consolation rout last season and reached the semifinals before falling to Boerne, 42-28. Robinson beat Boerne 39-38 in the consolation final. Graham won the championship bracket, defeating Plano Westwood in the final, 47-45.

Stephenville reached the semifinals and fell to Grapevine in the inaugural state tournament won by Southlake Carroll in 1998. The Jackets fell to Colleyville Heritage in the quarterfinals in 2006 and to Richland in the consolation quarterfinals in 2010.
