Local stars need big fourth round to reach finals

(July 10, 2015) — It’s down to the final performance Friday in Pool B of the Calgary Stampede, and three local rodeo stars need a strong showing in order to reach Sunday’s finals.

Jacobs Crawley of Stephenville enters the eighth performance – the fourth for Pool B stars – in fifth in with $4,500 in earnings in the saddle bronc competition, while Desdemona barrel racer Britany Diaz is fifth with $4,000. Former Tarleton bareback rider Richie Champion is splitting sixth and seventh with $4,000.

In their third go Friday, Champion earned $2,500 by placing fourth with 86.5 points aboard Cajun Queen. Diaz finished just outside the money, taking fifth in the barrels in 17.90 seconds. Crawley was sixth with 83.5 points aboard Crazy Day Job.

One local competitors has already reached the finals at Calgary. Stephenville star Marty Yates won two rounds in the Pool A tie-down, one on the fourth of July, the other on his 21st birthday last Monday, July 6.

The top four in the Sunday finals will turn around and compete in a shootout featuring a single performance with a $100,000 payout to the winner.
