Rollover claims life of Hico man Friday morning

ERATH COUNTY (July 10, 2015) — A one-vehicle rollover on US Highway 281, south of Stephenville, claimed the life of a Hico man. Alex Trevino Vargas, 75, was pronounced dead at the scene by Erath County Justice of the Peace Shawnee Bass at 8:50 a.m.

According to Texas DPS Trooper Adam Constancio’s report, Vargas was traveling southbound on US 281 at approximately 70 mph 4.25 miles northwest of Hico when the 2006 Chevy Cobalt left the roadway into the west bar ditch, striking a road sign.

The report went on to state, Vargas overcorrected and drove back across the highway into the east bar ditch and off a bridge where it struck a water gap and overturned. The Cobalt came to rest on its roof in a creek bed where first responders found Vargas still inside the vehicle upon arrival at the scene.

First responders were dispatched to the scene at 7:41 a.m. and Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue and Erath County EMS worked with Hico Volunteer Fire Department to clear the scene. Constancio and a family friend notified the family at 10 a.m.
