STEPHENVILLE (July 15, 2015) – Lorene Johnston, a Dublin resident and long-time waitress at Jake and Dorothy’s in Stephenville, is a woman with a heart for people. Raised by her grandparents in Dublin, Johnston, who spent her life waitressing and taking care of her family, was recently diagnosed with cancer. And now Johnston’s family is taking care of her.
She has three sons, David, Larry, and BJ Mayhall, and nine grandchildren who range between the ages of eight and 24.
“I don’t have any great-grandkids yet, thank goodness,” Johnston said.
After high school, Johnston married Bobby Mayhall and began her career as a waitress. She first worked at Dumplins Y Amigos in Odessa.
“I like the people,” she said. “I like talking and visiting with the customers and getting to know them. It just becomes a family.”
About ten years ago, Johnston began working for Jake and Dorothy’s.
“What makes Jake and Dorothy’s interesting is the customers and the people you work with,” she said. “It’s just a hometown kind of restaurant. That’s what I like. Everybody knows everybody and everybody likes everybody, like a big happy family.”
“She was the best employee,” Kerry Roach, Jake and Dorothy’s owner, said. “She would go above and beyond. She cared so much about the café and, if I was ever short, she was always willing to help.”
Johnston’s family is hosting a garage sale fundraiser in Jake and Dorothy’s parking lot on July 25-26 to raise money for Johnston’s medical expenses. There will also be a barbecue lunch and live and silent auction at noon July 25 in the small pavilion at the Stephenville City Park. Come by and help serve the woman who has served so many others.
