ERATH COUNTY (July 30, 2015) — One person is dead and two others are in the hospital after a tragic crash on US Highway 377 north of Stephenville Thursday afternoon.

While Texas Highway Patrol is still investigating, The Flash spoke with a trooper on scene who said the driver of a north-bound older-model grey Astro van was attempting to use his phone when he crossed the median into south-bound traffic. The driver of a south-bound silver Chevy Equinox LT SUV swerved into the north-bound lane in an attempt to avoid the collision, but it was too late. The driver of the Astro was already attempting to correct his path of travel, and the vehicles broadsided one another, turning the Equinox upside down in the ditch along-side the north-bound lane and halting the Astro partially on the roadway and partially on the shoulder in the south-bound lane.

Erath County EMS, Erath County Volunteer Fire Rescue, Cross Timbers First Responders and others were dispatched to the scene of two-vehicle accident at 4 p.m. and quickly called for three air ambulances to assist. First responders on scene reported one vehicle was upside-down in the ditch, while another vehicle was stranded in the roadway.

One patient, in the upside-down vehicle, was unconscious when first responders arrived on scene, and the jaws-of-life had to be used to remove her from the vehicle, a Chevy Equinox. The driver of the older model grey Astro van also had to have assistance getting out of the vehicle.

DPS and Texas Department of Transportation re-opened the roadway just after 5:30 p.m.
