STEPHENVILLE (July 29, 2015) — The UIL softball season is just the beginning of the sport each year for many competitors like Sami Shaffer.
A Stephenville High School junior-to-be, Shaffer, 16, followed her first-team all-district season that ended in the opening round of the 4A playoffs by helping her American Softball Association select team, the Fort Worth Batbusters, to the 16U Gold Division National Softball Tournament in Salem, Oregon.
Shaffer started at shortstop for the Batbusters, who powered their way to 17th place among the 33 of 48 qualifiers who participated.
Shaffer’s achievements add to a summer full of reasons to be optimistic about the future of the SHS softball program. Many of her high school teammates and future teammates were part of the Stephenville Shock that were runners-up in the Texas Teenage Softball 15U state tournament in Corsicana.
Shaffer hit .280 with an on-base percentage of .365 while playing centerfield for Stephenville last season. She drove in 17 runs and scored 15.
