Three wins at Jayhawker Roundup jumpstarts busy rodeo weekend

(August 1, 2015) — The winnings are already rolling in for local rodeo athletes this week, with three area pros winning events at the Jayhawker Roundup Rodeo in Hill City, Kansas, one of numerous events taking place in the Jayhawk state.

Ryan Watkins won the tie-down roping and $1,090 in 9.7 seconds, Kory Koontz, a heeler, won the team roping along with partner Colby Lovell, roping $959 in 5.2 seconds and Jacobs Crawley covered Rafter H Rodeo Livestock’s Sand Creek for 83 points and $895 in the pull riding.

The bulk of the world’s top competitors are focused on Dodge City Roundup Rodeo, where Stephenville heeler Travis Graves leads the opening round, Koontz is fifth in the second round and the all-Stephenville pairing of David Key and Martin Lucero are eighth in the second go and third in the all-important average. Graves is tied for fifth in the average.

Cody Ohl is the current leader in round two tie-down roping in 7.7 seconds, and Stephenville steer roper Martin Poindexter placed sixth in the second round, using 11.6 seconds to win $347.

Stephenville heeler Chad Williams is having a big week with partner Aaron Macy. They are sitting first in 4.9 at the Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo in Abilene, Kansas, third in Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg in 4.3 and fourth in Iowa’s Championship Rodeo in Sidney, Iowa after stopping the clock at 7.3. They are third in the average in Sidney with 20.1 seconds on two head.

Walt Woodard won round one in Sidney, roping $939 in 7.5 seconds. Luke Brown and Kollin VonAhn are sixth in the second round. Key and Lucero are second in Kansas Biggest Rodeo, where Huckabay heeler Paul Eaves and Stephenville heeler Jake Long are part of a three-team tie for fourth.

Long was third and earned $1,786 in 4.5 seconds at Caribou County Fair & Rodeo in Grace, Idaho. Graves tied for fourth and $1,313, and Lipan heeler Patrick Smith joined header Trevor Brazile for seventh in 5.5, pocketing $525.

Stephenville heeler Cole Davison stands to earn money in the Big Sky ProRodeo Roundup in Great Falls, Montana, where he is third in the second round and fourth in the average.

Desdemona saddle bronc rider Isaac Diaz is currently second with 84 points at Kansas Biggest Rodeo, where Stephenville’s Cimarron Boardman is third in tie-down roping in 9.1.

Crawley is tied for the lead at Wild Bill Hickock Rodeo, scoring 84 points on Andrews Rodeo’s Warh Hawk for a chance at two victories in a week. Watkins is currently tied for fifth in the tie-down there.

Tarleton barrel racer and pro rookie Shelby Herrmann continues to turn heads, running an 18.02 to take over second place in the ongoing Bozeman Stampede in Bozeman, Montana.
