STEPHENVILLE (August 3, 2015) — After coaching more than 900 basketball games from UIL Class A to junior college and back again, Doug Galyean is returning to the bench as head boys coach in Lingleville.

Galyean will also assist with the Cardinal football program, which began preseason practices Monday under first year head coach and Dublin native Troy Sparks.

Superintendent Curt Haley says Galyean solidifies a position he has had to fill twice this summer.

After guiding the Cardinals to two regional tournaments, three area titles and a 75-21 record over three seasons, Kade Eckert returned home to Harper to coach 2A girls. Zane Morris, younger brother of past Lingleville head coach Jance Morris, accepted an offer to replace Eckert, then backed out to accept a position at Lubbock High School.

School begins August 24, and Galyean reports for duty on September 1.

“We’re going to give him the time he needs to get ready, but I am very excited about this hire,” says Lingleville superintendent Coach Haley. “We are getting a very experienced coach and a proven leader who I believe will be an excellent role model for our boys and for all of our students.”

Galyean did not coach last school year, serving instead as an area director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was head boys coach and assistant principal at Eastland from 1995-2004 and 2007-2014, making 10 playoff appearances, winning three district championships and reaching three regional tournaments.

The new head Cardinal was head football and basketball coach at Six-Man Groom from 2004-06 and head basketball coach at Liberty Hill in 1994-95. He began teaching and coaching in 1980 at Ranger. He was there from 1980-86 and 1987-90. In 1986-87 he served as the first head coach when The Colony High School opened its doors in Lewisville.

Galyean was head men’s coach and a department chairperson at Cisco Junior College from 1990-94. He led CJC to second place in the Northern Texas Conference and on to the Junior College State Championships in 1993.

“Everything happens for a reason,” says Haley. “This didn’t all happen the way I planned it, but I’m very pleased to have Coach Galyean joining us.”
