STEPHENVILLE (August 20, 2015) — The stage is all set for history to be made in Granbury this weekend, as Stephenville needs just one win to give head coach Fran Metzger 600 for her career.

Stephenville came within an eyelash of the monumental win Thursday night, dropping a pair of three-set nail biters to 6A Copperas Cove and 5A Abilene Cooper in pool play at the Classic Chevrolet Tournament. The Honeybees defeated Burleson Centennial for the second time this season to give Metzger win No. 599.

Both the losses came in thrilling back-and-forth fashion, while the win over Centennial was in straight sets.

Stephenville and Cooper were even at a set apiece with Cooper leading the third 18-17 before five aces during a closing run of seven straight points. Cooper won an equally competitive second set 25-21, scoring the winning point on a tip, similar to the many tips they scored while sweeping the Honeybees in a regulation match Tuesday in Stephenville.

The first set may have been the best of all three, with Stephenville coming out on top 27-25. A tip by Seaton was the key, opening up a 23-20 lead Cooper couldn’t overcome.

Stephenville made quick work of Centennial, 25-21, 25-16, but there was nothing quick about their battle with Copperas Cove, which mirrored the loss to Cooper. The Bees scored 19 of the last 30 to come back for a 25-21 first set win, before Copperas Cove held off a late 6-1 Stephenville run to win the second, 25-22. The third set was close the the entire way, with Coppeas Cove scoring the final two for a 25-23 win.

Kourtney Seaton had 18 kills against Cooper and eight against Copperas Cove. Mikayla Hobbs had 13 kills against Copperas Cove and eight against Cooper. Kylee Ponder amassed 23 digs against Copperas Cove, when Taylor Garber racked up 17 assists and Chelsea Gillespie added 16.

The Honeybees play at either 10 or 11 Friday morning, depending on the outcome of other pool matches.
