Hannibal  — Matilda Stewart, 99, of Hannibal died September 9, 2015 in Fort Worth.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday September 12, 2015 at the Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Williams and Dale Pugh officiating. Burial will follow at Hannibal Cemetery in Erath County. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday at the Stephenville Funeral Home.
Matilda was born on February 27, 1916 in Johnsville, Texas to the late William Thomas and Mattie Cary Gossett. She married George W. Stewart on September 23, 1942 in Lampasas. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1965. Matilda continued to live in the house that Mr. Stewart and her built in 1946 and ran the farm at Hannibal. She loved her animals, her community and was always there when she was needed. She was one of the individuals that kept the Huckabay community center a gathering place for community events. Matilda loaned the Huckabay volunteer fire department seed money in its early days, because she had seen a need for its service for the northern Erath County residents.
Survivors include her son, Richard Stewart and wife Margaret of Hannibal; daughter in law, Dorthy Barron of Ranger; Grandchildren Greg Stewart and wife Julie; Rene Taylor and husband Robert, Brent Barron, Alan Barron, Lisa Wright, Melody Boyd and Cheryl Flatt; many Great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren; nephews T.H. Anderson and Jimmy Anderson of Stephenville.
Matilda was preceded in death by one child of a previous marriage, A.T. Barron.
