STEPHENVILLE (September 11, 2015) — Stephenville head coach Fran Metzger was not happy to be forced to call timeout so early, and she let her team know it.
Then they responded.
With authority.
Stephenville fell behind 6-1 in the opening moments of their match with a mixed JV/varsity squad from 6A Copperas Cove at Gandy Gym Friday afternoon, but after the early timeout by Metzger came buzzing back with plenty of sting.
A Kourtney Seaton block a Taylor Garber ace, two kills by Kaleigh Conger and another by Kerstin Fredrickson fueled a six-point run for a 7-6 lead, and though Copperas Cove led briefly once more moments later, the momentum had changed for good.
Stephenville went on to win in in straight sets, 25-22, 25-13,
The service game of Seaton kept Copperas Cove from mounting any kind of charge early in game two, as Stephenville rushed to a 8-3 lead. And as soon as the opponent did start to gather momentum, Conger fired a kill shot then aced a serve to make it 10-5.
Even after a Copperas Cove timeout, Nicona Stilwell landed a kill to make it 13-5 and the rout was on. Stilwell craftily redirected a tip for a 17-6 lead. Even setter Chelsea Gillespie got in on the scoring action, saving Stephenville by stabbing a three-ball over the net for a kill and a commanding 19-8 advantage.
The third set was also just a formality, with the Bees jumping on top 8-2 and never looking back.
Conger proved the Tuesday night scare with her ankle was nothing more than just that – a scare. She bounced right back with eight kills, 11 digs and four aces to lead Stephenville Friday. Kourtney Seaton had seven kills and two aces, Emily Brandon and Kerstin Fredrickson six kills each, Hobbs five kills and 10 digs, and Kylee Ponder 11 digs.
Stephenville visits China Spring at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
