ERATH COUNTY (September 17, 2015) — It was a busy night for Erath CountySheriff’s deputies. While details are still emerging from the long night, Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant sat down with The Flash this morning with what he knows so far.

It started just after 6 p.m. when a Bluff Dale resident called 9-1-1 and reported a man (in his mid 30’s, the sheriff reported) was holding his mother and daughter hostage at their home in Bluff Dale. He reportedly said if law enforcement arrived he would “shoot to kill.”

ECSO called for backup from a Hood County SWAT team and when officers arrived at the residence in Bluff Dale, they discovered the mother and daughter safe in the home and learned the man had escaped into the wooded area around the home. Bryant said as officers searched for the subject, he turned himself into authorities and was taken to a mental health facility in the area.

“We were able to resolve this one safely and get the guy the help he desperately needs, which is always a wonderful thing,” Bryant said. “But that wasn’t even close to the end of the night for my deputies.”

Around 8:30 p.m. ECSO officers were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance on County Road 105, in the Chalk Mountain area. Bryant said the initial report was of a man and wife arguing inside a home where their son also was.

While not all the details are available at this time, Bryant did say early reports indicate the father had a rifle during the argument with his wife and fired it when his son attempted to intervene. The bullet hit the young man in the chest.

When first responders arrived on scene, they found the gunshot victim on the front porch, the subject in the yard and the weapon still on the property. The son, who an emergency dispatcher reported to 25 but who’s name was not yet released, was taken via Native Air to a Fort Worth hospital where he remains this morning in critical condition.

No arrest was made in this case and Bryant said he’d spoken with District Attorney Alan Nash who recommended the case be brought before a Grand Jury for advisement.

Other responding units to the incident on CR 105 included Erath County EMS, Erath County Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Hamilton County EMS and Hico Volunteer Fire Department.
