(September 21, 2015) — Former Stephenville quarterback Tyler Jones continues to shine for Texas State, and today was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Student Athlete of the Week after amassing 470 yards of offense and accounting for five touchdowns against Southern Miss.

Jones, a 2013 graduate of Stephenville High School, led the 2012 Yellow Jackets to the 2012 3A Division I championship, the school’s fifth football state title. The Texas Sportswriters Association named him 3A Offensive Player of the Year, and media on hand at the state final – a 70-35 win over El Campo – voted him the game’s offensive MVP after he accounted for nine touchdowns.

Tyler Jones accumulated 470 yards in total offense and was responsible for five touchdowns against Southern Miss with career-high rushing totals of 160 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. He also completed a career-high 31 passes on 46 attempts for 310 yards and three TDs. Jones scored Texas State’s first touchdown in the game with a 35-yard run before recording a career-best 66-yard run to set up a field goal and scoring another TD on a 54-yard run. His first touchdown pass was a 32-yard pass that gave Texas State a 25-21 halftime lead. Then, he threw a team-high 36-yard pass to set up his four-yard TD pass on Texas State’s final offensive possession.
