WICHITA FALLS – Erika Richarme claimed a championship with a four-match sweep of Women’s Singles Flight 3 this weekend at the Midwestern State Invitational.

The reigning LSC Freshman of the Year, Richarme opened the tournament with a comeback win by battling back from a 3-6 loss to begin her match. She bounced back with a 6-4 win to force a super-tiebreaker, which she claimed 10-5 to stay in contention for the flight title.

After dominating her next two matches with scores of 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-2, Richarme met with Central Oklahoma in the championship round. Richarme won 6-2, 6-2 against her UCO counterpart to claim the title.

Joining Richarme in her respective championship match was newcomer Shelby Fillingame, who won her first three matches including a 3-6, 6-0, 10-6 rally effort against Central Oklahoma in the second match of the weekend. The freshman for Tarleton fell in the championship match for her only singles loss of the weekend.

Luiza Ferraro-Adas and Elena Preadca each went 2-1 in their respective pools to just miss out on qualifying for their championship matches while Ellie Stevens and Ashleigh Elward fought hard but ultimately went 0-3 in singles matches.

Meanwhile, Tarleton had little trouble in doubles play as all three TexAnn tandems finished in second place of their respective flights and played in the championship match. The team of Adas and Preadca paired up in flight two and advanced to the title match with two wins before bowing out in second place. Richarme and Elward won three straight doubles matches before dropping a close 6-8 battle to St. Edward’s while Fillingame and Stevens rounded out doubles play with a 2-1 record in flight five.

“We were able to get a lot of tennis in this weekend,” said head coach Lance Drake. Our play was better in several areas, but we are still continuing to make some unwise decisions and unnecessary, unforced errors. It’s just like in every other sport – the player or team with the least amount of errors, usually comes out on top. It’s early and we still have a lot of work to do.”

Tarleton will wrap up the fall tennis season in San Antonio next weekend at the ITA South Central Regional Tournament, held at St. Mary’s. The TexAnns who qualify will advance to the ITA National Tournament in Sumter, South Carolina on October 8.
