STEPHENVILLE (October 3, 2015) — Daniel McCants bobbled the ball around on the turf and it escaped him into the end zone where it was recovered by Buck Wilson of No. 18 Texas A&M-Commerce.
It was a TAMUC touchdown on its own kickoff. For a 49-0 lead midway through the third quarter. Summing up the way the night went for both teams. And how the season has soured thus far for Tarleton State.
A&M-Commerce (4-1, 3-0) went on to hand Tarleton (0-4, 0-3) its worst loss in school history, a 63-0 shellacking at Memorial Stadium Saturday.
Tarleton was shut out for the first time under head coach Cary Fowler, who took over in 2010. The Texans had not been shut out since 2008 and not at home since 2006. They had scored touchdowns in 50 consecutive games and at least a field goal in 58 straight.
But not Saturday. A day that began with a large crowd of 7.248 on Family Weekend, but ended with most fans gone early in disappointment.
Many were gone at halftime, when TAMUC led 28-0, and many more were gone by the time the muffed kick was booted around in the end zone. Fewer still were on hand for a 90-yard touchdown sprint by Theo Wofford to highlight the fourth quarter for the Lions, who pitched their first shutout since 2004.
Wofford finished with 155 yards and Richard Cooper 136 including a 72 yard run to set up the first TAMUC score. Harrison Stewart was 14-20 passing for 196 yards and four scores, while both Gabriel Rodriguez pass attempts were caught for touchdowns. Derrick Macon had 109 yards on six catches for the Lions. Macon and Justice Luce each scored twice through the air.
The Lions amassed 605 yards of offense, par for the course against a Tarleton defense that surrendered a school record 714 last week and was allowing 604.3 per game before Saturday.
Tarleton had just 216 total yards. Quarterback Zed Woerner was injured on the opening drive and didn’t return. Backups Alex Craig and Derek Kiser combined for just 86 passing yards and the Texans rushed for 130.
It was the fourth straight TAMUC win over Tarleton, the third in the regular season with the Presidents’ Cup – their rivalry trophy – on the line. The Lions also won in the semifinal round of the inaugural LSC playoffs last season.
