STEPHENVILLE (October 12, 2015) — Stephenville finished second in both varsity races at its home cross country meet Monday morning behind top 10 individual performances by Emily Kirbo, Peyton Wood, Kayliana Castillo and Gilbert Garcia.

Kirbo was especially strong, rushing to second individually in the two-mile girls race with a time of 14:33.67, almost 12 seconds faster than third place. Brock took first, third and fourth on its way to winning the meet. Wood placed fifth in 14:51.36, and Castillo seventh in 15:08.57.

Shelby Wood just missed the top 10, taking 11th in 15:17.23, while Anahi Rivas finished the team scoring in 15th with a time of 15:29.95. That’s 40 points, just three behind Brock’s 37. Early was a distant third-place finisher with 92 points.

“For the girls to be three points away from a really good Brock team, I was pretty excited about that,” said Stephenville head coach Kristi Mayes. “I had a JV runner, Anahi Rivas, who stepped up to the varsity and ran her way into a scoring position. She just brought it and made the most of her opportunity and it’s always fun to see kids do that and better themselves.”

Displacing other runners for Stephenville were 21st place Alissa Adams in 15:46.81 and 23rd place Odalys Salazar in 15:55.87. Kate Daugherty did not impact the standings, but managed to finish 24th in 15:58.62.

Garcia crossed the line in 19:15.72, taking ninth for the Yellow Jackets, who scored 63 points and finished second behind the 46 of Wichita Falls. Third was Brock at 104.

The rest of Stephenville’s scoring runners stayed in a pack most of the way and finished consecutively. Pedro Manriquez was 12th in 19:18.72, Christian Brown 13th in 19:26.35, Miguel Carrillo 14th in 19:34.73 and Riley Forehand 15th in 19:41.98.

Displacing runners were Jose Hernandez, 18th in 19:54.32, an Evan Moody, 25th in 20:32.74.

“For the boys to be second behind Wichita Falls is good. They’re a good team and a big school so we knew they would be a challenge,” Mayes said. “The boys ran pretty well and I’m excited to see what we’ll do with them next Monday at district.”

The district meet will again be hosted in Brownwood due to timing issues in Graham. Mayes says the move is good for her team, as the course in Brownwood is mostly flat and her teams ran well while winning district titles there last season.

The meet in Stephenville went off without a hitch, but not without plenty of help.

“The kids helped a lot and made sure we got everything cleaned up pretty quickly. The Forehand and Wood parents, like always, were a big help, so a shout out to them and all the volunteers who made it go as well as it did,” Mayes said. “And of course my husband (coach Rus Mayes), who led the kids through the course and did so much work behind the scenes. He’s my hero, like always.”

SISD Superintendent Matt Underwood and SHS Principal Stephanie Traweek were honorary starters for the races, and Mr. Underwood also loaned his Ranger to the cause. Bramlett Implement loaned two Gators and even transported them to and from the event.
