RANGER, Texas  – Ranger College head soccer coach Jamie Beltran was frustrated at the end of the first half on Monday afternoon after watching his team struggle against Dallas Christian. Playing to a 0-0 deadlock without much passion and aggression simply wasn’t good enough.

And he told them so.

The Lady Rangers answered Beltran’s call for a more aggressive game in the second half in a big way. The Ranger College women scored twice in the final half and streaked to a 2-0 non-conference victory.

“I just reminded them that they should be happy to be playing college at this level and that there were a lot of others who would love to be in their place,” said Beltran. “They didn’t play in the first half like they are capable and I told them we can’t do that and get to where we want.”

The Lady Rangers dominated the second half from the start. The RC defense allowed Dallas Christian to move the ball out of its own end of the field just once in the final 45 minutes. As a team, they did not allow DC a single shot on goal in the final half of play.

“They started playing like they can in the second,” said Beltran. “They were much more aggressive and pushed the ball the entire half.”

Kortney Wells put Ranger on the scoreboard with a long strike in the 55th minute. The Riverton, Utah, freshman pulled up in front of the box and skied a shot that skipped off the Dallas Christian goalie’s hands and into the net.

Minutes later, sophomore Vanessa Hernandez punched in a shot from in front of the goal on a corner kick to push the lead to 2-0.

Hernandez’s goal came in the 77th minute of play.

Three RC goalies shared in the shutout, including Merisa Garrigan, Kaylani Crews and Emily Willey.

With the win, the RC women’s team improved to 7-5-2 for the season and moved to within a win of tying the 2011 team for the school’s all-time record for wins in a single season.

Ranger College has three games remaining on its schedule, including a conference showdown with rival Cisco on Wednesday in Ranger.
