TexAnns to battle for first place against TWU, A&M-Commerce

STEPHENVILLE (October 15, 2015) — Tarleton State is tied atop the Lone Star Conference standings and has the final two games of its four-match conference home stand Friday evening and Saturday at Wisdom Volleyball Gym. Below is the preview from Tarleton Athletic Communications:

AT A GLANCE
Tarleton will carry its eight-game winning streak into a first-place showdown against Texas Woman’s on Friday at 6 p.m. as the two teams are in a three-way tie atop the Lone Star Conference standings at 6-1. The TexAnns will follow up with a match against Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Tarleton put Midwestern State away in four games last Saturday for their third straight win against the Mustangs. Hailey Roberts recorded her fifth 30-kill game of the season in the win.

TARLETON VS TEXAS WOMAN’S
The TexAnns came away with their first win against Texas Woman’s since 2012, taking the match in four games on the road. TWU holds the all-time series lead at 18-33. Tarleton is 8-10 against TWU at home. TWU enters the game on a seven-game winning streak and is 5-0 on the road.

TARLETON VS A&M-COMMERCE
The TexAnns are facing the Lions for the first time this season. Tarleton has swept A&M-Commerce the last two meetings and has won the last four home meetings against the Lions. A&M-Commerce leads the all-time series 17-16, but Tarleton has won 7 of the last 9 games.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
Tarleton is 7-0 at Wisdom Gym on the season and has won 21 of the 23 sets in the seven games. Since 2008, the TexAnns are 71-19 at home.

NATIONAL POLL
Tarleton received 14 votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Texas Woman’s received 10 votes in the poll.

AWARD WINNERS
Hailey Roberts was awarded the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week for the second time in her stellar career. Roberts also claimed the LSC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. The TexAnns have four players take home LSC weekly awards this season with Roberts,Chandler Gow named setter of the week twice and Meg Umbel and Ayssa Garcia each winning defensive player of the week.

HISTORIC STREAK
The TexAnns are riding an eight-game winning streak with is tied for the third-longest streak in school history (2008). Tarleton won nine straight games in 2010 and 2012 for the longest streak in the NCAA era. The 1991 team won 12 in a row as an NAIA program.

LEAGUE LEADERS
Tarleton leads the Lone Star Conference in five of the six statistical categories listed on the conference website. Meg Umbel leads the LSC in hitting percentage at .383 and blocks per set (1.22).Hailey Roberts is tops in kills per set (6.25) and aces per set (0.52) and Chandler Gow holds the top spot for assists per set (12.02). As a team, Tarleton is first in the LSC in hitting percentage (.248), assists per set (14.24) and kills per set (14.93).

THE NATION’S BEST
Hailey Roberts leads the nation in total kills with 419 – 87 more than the second place. Roberts’ 6.25 kills per set and 7.09 points per set is also tops in the nation. As a team, Tarleton is second in the nation in kills per set (14.93) and assists per set (14.24).

COUNTDOWN TO 200
Mary Schindler, who is in her 11th season as the head coach of Tarleton, enters this game with 196 career wins as she moves closer to 200 all-time victories at the helm of the TexAnns. Schindler, who is the longest tenured coach in the history of the program, already owns the most wins by a coach in Tarleton history.

PURPLE OUT
Friday’s game against Texas Woman’s is Purple Out; so all fans are encouraged to fill Wisdom Gym in their purple Tarleton gear. Saturday’s game against A&M-Commerce will provide free pizza prior to the game while it last.
